Distefano services: CNC machining
One of the myriad of advanced manufacturing services that Distefano offers is CNC machining. Included in our arsenal of state-of-the-art production equipment are numerous CNC machines and several CNC machine centers.
What is CNC machining?
CNC machines typically replace, or work in conjunction with, existing manufacturing processes. For example, instead of using a drill press to machine holes, a CNC machine can be used. When a drill press is used a worker places a drill in the drill chuck, which is secured in the spindle of the drill press. Then the worker manually sets the desired speed for rotation and activates the spindle. The worker would then manually pull the quill lever to drive the drill into the workpiece. In such a scenario over a large volume there is an opportunity for error caused by fatigue or error.
A CNC machining center can be programmed to perform the same operation more automatically. Everything that a drill press operator would have done manually is done by the CNC machine. This includes: placing the drill in the spindle, activating the spindle, positioning the workpiece under the drill, machining the hole, and turning off the spindle. Of course, there are manufacturing processes that require much more skill that can also be automated with CNC machines.
