Distefano’s laser cutters allow us to provide added services we otherwise would not be able to provide clients. Laser cutting is a way to precisely cut materials. Using a laser cutter allows for accuracy and complexity impossible with conventional machining tools.

How it works

Laser cutting works by exciting a gaseous medium, causing it to amplify light reflected back and forth within the laser chamber. This light comes from an aperture and is focused by a lens onto a precise point. Beams of one-fifth of a millimeter in width focusing 1,000 to 2,000 watts of energy are typical in process laser cutters. Laser cutting machines are integrated into a CAD/CAM (computer-aided design, computer-aided manufacturing) system, which takes a design file and implements it onto a workpiece.

Precision cutting

A typical laser cutter can create features as small as 1mm in size. Specialized lasers often feature sizes that are even smaller. The first laser cuts were made in 1967 as an offshoot of a military research project focused on lasers. The beams used in laser cutting are “class 4” lasers, the machines are built to ensure human operators are not exposed to them directly.

The technology that Distefano’s equipment utilizes is state-of-the-art. We use 2,000 to 5,000 watt lasers, hi-def plasma cutters up to 1-inch by 25-feet, and CNC shears up to three-eighths-of-an-inch by 11-feet.
